  Love The Child

Love the child.
The little one looks only
for your love
in her simplicity.

Shut her out. She feels
your heart's door close
leaving her doorstepped,
alone, exposed to fear.

Love the child.
She dreams of being held
not tossed aside,
impatiently dismissed.

Birds and butterflies
wing her far away
from sadness when the
child remains unloved.

Coldness takes away
the sunshine in her eyes.
stills the lively
dance in tapping toes.

Love the child
while you can.
Those young-spun years
will never come again

Without your love
the child will grow
a shadow, unsubstantial,
living in grey sky.

Love the child
so she can learn to trust.
Without this she dies
in shuttered isolation.

Outstretched arms,
clear eyes, smile
keeping face alight with
welcome expectation.

Love the child.
Wipe the welcome off
instilling fear and pain
and all you have is

One unloved adult
Lost to the child,
housed in isolation
self-barred from Life.
