![]() Sherri, Susan, Becca, Booker and the rest of the Kids. Today I will simply write a short tale about Merryflipper, a young Dolphin, who went out one day to find someone to play with, because he was tired of splashing in the ocean alone - there was no one else his age. The older dolphins who were teen dolphins didn't seem to quite understand the things he liked to do - such as chasing small fish and making them swim in circles till they were huffing and puffing through their gills like a grampus. Another thing he liked to do was see if he could outswim his reflection in the water but he never managed it ! Anyway, this one afternoon he was swimming lazily along making little fishes jump as he went by and gave a dolphin," Boo!" and then he noticed a furry looking creature smaller than he, also paddling lazily along but coming in the opposite direction. The the distance closed, Merrysflipper watched fascinated when he saw the creature suddenly turn over and float on its back and clap its paws together like it was applauding someone giving a good performance. Merryflipper swam closer and closer till his snout gently touch the creature whose almost black eyes sparkled at him like he was laughing at a private joke. At the touch of Merry's snout the creature simply reached out his paws and gently patted Merry either side of his nose. " Hi", he said, " who are you ? My name is Rollover because I am always rolling over from my tummy to my back. I like to float on my back but I swim on my tummy. You can call me Rollo for short if you like. What's you name?" Merry replied, " My name is Merryflipper, and I'm a dolphin - and I am looking for someone to play with because everyone in the dolphin family is older than I, and I'm tired of being alone. Would you play with me?" Rollo clapped his paws in delight, " YES, that would be fun. What shall we do, Merry, can I call you Merry? I'm an otter and I swam away from my family today because I was bored. I will probably get into trouble for doing that but they are not TOO far away," He sighed,"How come parents are no fun at all - they seem to forget how to play". Merry told his new friend what he used to do by himself and Rollo laughed. " That sounds fun I can see why the teen dolphins wouldn't want to join you though - they think they're So grown up but they're not you know. Anyway, let's swim along and see what we can find". So the two of them swam side by side looking for something interesting. They were so busy chatting and getting to know eachother they didn't notice a seagull flying overhead and nearly collided with eachother as a fish leapt up in front of them then made a graceful plop back into the sea and the sea gull swooped down too late to catch it. " Bother!" grumbled the sea gull, " I was hungry and that would have been a tasty lunch for me. Hi," he added. "you two look like you are busy discussing something interesting -what's the bait? I'm Fleet, which means "fast", but", he smiled ruefully, " Not fast enough as you just saw!" The new friends told Fleet they were looking for some fun and games and would he like to join them. Having seen what Fleet had just done gave them an idea. " Why don't we swim around", suggested Rollo", and Merry and I will dive down looking for fish and surprise them so much they leap up above the surface of the waves. Then you, Fleet, can see if you can tag them - NOT eat them, just tag them by softly tapping with your beak and fly up again, then they will know we are not here to hurt them but play games." The three newly made friends thought this was a great idea and none of them had ever done such a thing before because none of them had had any friends to play with. So this is how they spent the rest of the afternoon and into the evening while there was still light. Merry could dive deeper than Rollo so he surprised the bigger fish who leapt up higher in the air and were easier for Fleet to tag, and Rollo would Otter-"Boo" smaller fish and they would jump high too, but were harder for Fleet to tag because they were so quick. After a while even the fish caught on - and joined in the fun, leaping out of the sea on their own and quckly diving back down before Fleet could tag them. So I will leave you watching the friends playing - and you can think of some other games they could play - okay? Maybe you can write another story with new games. Have fun.
