Norry sat very still inside her box that was big enough for her bed where she could lie down on her soft pink feather eiderdown that covered it and overflowed either side nearly touching the floor. Beside the bed she had a small round table on which a dainty flowered lampshade lit up with all sorts of colored flowers when the bulb went on. so sometimes in the night if she woke up and felt scared because it was dark, and there were windows on three sides of her box, she would swtich on the lamp and - pooff, it was like she was suddenly in a garden of flowers and she could lie and imagine she could smell the different scents. she knew what the yellow Peace rose smelled like and she always loved the one deep deep red rose with a beautiful fragrance but couldn't remember the name. then a whole row of sweetpeas, pink, white, purple, and red that hung like a flower wall on one part of the lamp, and on the green lawn, pink-tipped daisies poked up amongst the clover leaves. Norry imagined she could go hunting for a four leaf clover. there were beds of small flowers - snowdrops, pansies, croccii and others and she quite forgot the dark outside when it was night-time because inside her room she could enjoy her flowers all lit up on her lamp. She had a small chair that she could sit in and it swung round in any direction so she could look out of her windows on three sides of her box and watch what was happening on the outside. Along one wall was a book case with her favorite stories, and on a round table was stacked coloring crayons and paper to draw on, and a paint box with a jar full of paintbrushes by it, and she even had a little tape player with a radio, so she could listen to music whenever she wanted. Norry was very shy and sometimes she would look out of one window and see one or two little boys and girls playing in their gardens, but she was too scared to go to them and ask if she could play. One afternoon when the sun was really HOT and it shined on Norry's box making it VERY warm inside so she decided to open her windows and let in the outside air. she could see the leaves on the trees were fluttering so she knew there was a breeze and it might help cool her box down. When she was on the north side of her little home she had just opened the window when she heard a little voice saying,"does anyone live in this place?" Norry couldn't see anyone at all, so she quietly rose on her tiptoes and peered out the window. First she looked up into the tree that grew nearby, but all she saw were thick brown branches and tree trunk, and a squirrel scampered along one long branch but was quickly out of sight hidden in the leaves. Then she looked around as far as she could from her window and only saw an empty street where a little girl was just disappearing out of sight round the corner. But when Norry looked down, she saw a baby turtle craning his neck from his shell and trying to see who was leaning out of the window. " Hello," he cried," I am lost and I saw this beautiful box and wondered if anyone lived here. my name is Donn. I am feeling scared because I don't know where I am and I don't know how to get home. Can you help me? Norry leaned out a little further from her window and Donn shrank back withdrawing his neck into his shell till only the tip of his nose showed. "I won't hurt you" promised Norry. " honestly. I like turtles. Can you tell me where you live ?" Donn said his little master, Brian had taken him to the park and while Brian went to buy an icecream because he wanted to cool down , Donn had somehow wandered off and now he was lost. I don't know if you have ever seen turtle tears but they are large and wet and oblong, and two trickled down Donn's face and fell off the end of his nose. Norry felt so sorry for him but inside her heart was racing because she knew that for Donn to get home she would have to go outside and show him the way, and THAT meant she would have to maybe MEET people, and what about Brian? he might think she had tried to steal Donn. Norry felt even more scared with that idea. However, she plucked up courage and stepped out of her box and walked very slowly down the street to where she knew Donn's house was. On the way they met two young girls and a boy going the same direction and the three strangers stopped and asked Norry who the turtle belonged to. Norry said she and Donn were going back to his home as he had been in the park. " OH, you're going to Brian's house?" one of the girls cried, " why we are all going there too - did you know it's his birthday today?" Norry's heart sank and she was sure they would hear the thump, thump, thump of her heart as it raced inside her chest. She wished she could just sink into the ground and disappear. Then she thought, perhaps these kids would take Donn with them and then she wouldn't have to meet Brian or see anyone else. But when she suggested it to Donn, he immediately said ' NO. I want YOU to come with me" Dragging her feet, Norry follwed behind the other three and noticed they all had a small packet or parcel done up with ribbon. Oh dear, she thought, it's a good thing i don't know Brian or he would be expecting a present and I don't have one. When they reached Brian's house there were already at least ten or eleven other children in the garden and some balloons were tied to the mailbox and waving around in the breeze. Some were bright blue, some green, orange, red, white, purple and some had Happy Birthday printed on them, or a Pooh Bear with Tigger and Roo, or a clown's face with a bright red bulbous nose and a big grin. As the four of them walked up the garden path, a young lad of about six or seven came rushing down the garden path. He ignored Norry's three companions and bent down to pick Donn up. "Oh, Donn," he cried" I thought I had LOST you. I have been hunting everywhere and noone knew where you were. I am SOOOOO happy you have come home". " Happy Birthday" chorused the two little girls and the boy who had come with Norry and Donn. They passed over their presents to Brian who took them and said, " thankyou", very politely, but he looked at Norry with a HUGE smile on his face and said, " You have given me the BEST birthday present in the world! You brought Donn back to me and you must come and join my birthday party". Somehow, Norry didn't feel so scared any more and even though she was very shy and didn't exactly TALK to many of the children unless they said something first. She did enjoy the time and by the time the party was over, and she felt stuffed with birthday cake and cream as well as other yummy food. She had made friends with at least five other girls and boys, and especially Brian who seemed like he could never thank her enough for bringing Donn home. " You HAVE to come back again and we can play with Donn together" he told Norry and she shyly smiled and nodded her head and said she would try. Later that evening, back in her safe little box, Norry sat in her swivel chair and looked up into the sky as Night took over from Day and the first tiny star began to twinkle. She thought about her adventure and how she had been so scared of meeting other children but found they were really just like her and it was fun to laugh and be happy with someone her age, and to know a turtle who liked her. She was glad it had been HOT that day and she had had to open the window or she would never have heard Donn asking if anyone was home. She thought to herself - that was like opening a window of opportunity - meaning "I can make a way to find something new and different if I am brave enough to go outside my box now and then" . When the stars played hide and seek among the moon lit clouds Norry lay on top of her feather eiderdown because it was too hot to crawl under it. and when she fell asleep she dreamed of Donn and Brian and her new found friends, and I will leave you to imagine what they did together !! ***************** Goessoftly Retired Therapist www.goesoftlyishere.com No copies allowed | PIGMUS STORY 1.
