Dorrie, who was eight years old, lived with her four year old little sister, Corrie, and their mom and dad in a small cottage near Wimbledon Woods out in the countryside. One day, Corrie was playing in their garden when she heard what she thought was a puppy crying. Corrie LOVED animals and she couldn't stand the thought of a little puppy being sad so thought she'd go and find it. Without thinking, she went off down the garden path and out through the little white gate and headed off towards the trees in Wimbledon Woods. However, as she got nearer to the trees it looked kind of dark inside and she stopped and stood and sucked her thumb, wondering if she dared to go along the path by herself. However, she didn't know that Dorrie had seen her wander off and was worried she would get into trouble or maybe get lost and had hurried off after her little sister. Corrie was SO happy when Dorrie came up and said, " Corrie, where are you going? I saw you run off towards the woods and you know Mommy wouldn't like this if you got lost or something". Corrie siad, " But LISTEN, Dorrie. I heard a puppy crying and he or she sounds so sad and I HAD to see if I could find the puppy and see why it's is crying". Both the girls stood very still and listened. Sure enough they could both hear the plaintive yelping of a very small doggie and Dorrie understood perfectly why Corrie had come searching for it. She looked down at her sister and smiled. "Okay, let's go see what we can find. " Corrie was SO happy to have her big sister with her and she took Dorrie's hand and together they went off into the trees. After a little way along the path they heard a rustling in the bushes to the left of them, and stopped, thinking it might be the puppy. But it wasn't. Out hopped a little bunny rabbit who looked up at them 'cos she was smaller than Corrie and a lot smaller than Dorrie. What was special about her was that she could speak people language, so when Corrie exclaimed, " Oh look, a Bunny Rabbit !", to her amazement the bunny looked up at her and said, " Hi. I'm Bunny Blue, who are you and why are you in my Woods?' She was called Bunny Blue because she had beautiful blue grey fur that was SO soft and smooth as silk and two lovely long ears that flopped down either side of her sweet looking face and snuffly quivering nose. The girls told her about hearing the puppy crying and that they had come into the woods to find him or her. Bunny Blue looked rather suspiciously at them. " And what will you do it you find her? Are you going to hurt her 'cos she is crying?" 'Oh NO!" exclaimed Corrie, " I LOVE little puppies. I can't bear to hear them sad and crying and we want to HELP, not hurt, him or her." "Oh," said Bunny Blue, "well, that's alright then, and it's a girl by the way. Her mommy got run over by a car this morning and she misses her terribly". A big tear rolled down Corrie's cheek and she asked if Bunny Blue knew where the little puppy was. "Oh yes, I can take you to her if you like, just follow me" and Bunny Blue started off hopping down the path through the woods. It was very easy for Dorrie and Corrie to follow her because her white bobtail flashed in front of them as it bobbed up and down every time there was a hop, skip and jump. It was not long before she stopped and when the girls looked around they didn't see any sign of a puppy but the could hear whimpering that seemed to be coming from somewhere really close. Bunny Blue pointed to a huge long tree trunk that was lying on the ground like the tree had been blown over by a really bad storm a long time ago. Looking at it closely they could see it was hollow with a dark hole in the center that seemed to go back a long way. From the inside of the tree trunk came the sound of a puppy crying. Corrie immendiately cried into the hollow tree trunk, " Puppy, it's alright, please don't cry. We are going to help you." At the sound of her voice the puppy's wailing kind of hiccupped to a small whimpering, Dorrie said she didn't think she was small enough to crawl into the tree trunk but Corrie said she could easily. Bunny Blue was definitely the right size and offered to go first so Corrie could follow her white bobtail in the shadow of the tree. So Buuny Blue went hopping into the hollow and Corrie followed her patch of white as her tail went boobibg up and down - hippity hop, hippity hop. In the grey shadow inside the trunk it was hard to see things clearly, but the puppy sniffled and Corrie reached out her hand and felt a small smooth furry body and felt a tiny tail wag against her hand. She said softly, "Hi, Puppy, we've come to help you and we won't hurt you one bit. Will you come with us? Where is your mommy?" The puppy said in a quavery small puppy voice,"My mommy got runned over this morning. We were walking down the road by the Woods and a big truck with logs on it came roaring along and hit her and she was all still and didn't move. I couldn't get her to talk to me so I got frightened and ran away. I came into these trees and found this log I could hide in". "Well", said Bunny Blue in a gentle voice, " you don't need to be alone any more, you can come with us if you like?" "Please do", urged Corrie, "we need to get out of this tree trunk, it is dark and cold in here and the sun is shining outside. My big sister Dorrie is waiting for us, let's go to her now". So they went back along the inside of the fallen tree, and Bunny Blue went hippity hop, hippity hop in front of them, and soon they crawled out into the sunshine. The little puppy had been all day in the shadows and put a little paw over her eyes because the bright light hurt them at first. After a little while the sun's warmth felt so good and the girls stroked her head and body and hugged her gently and she felt comforted and less sad. Bunny Blue waffled her nose and patted the puppy softly with her velvet paw. "What is your name, Puppy? she asked. "I don't have a name," the little one said, and a large tear rolled down her cheek. The girls looked at eachother and Dorrie said, "Would you like us to choose a name for you? The puppy nodded her head and wagged her tail so furiously it made Bunny Blue dizzy to watch her. Corrie and Dorrie thought hard. Then Corrie said, " When you came out of the hollow tree trunk you were so sad and cold and used to the shadows and dark but when you came into the sunlight and started to feel warm and safe and not so sad everything seemed brighter for you. Can we call you Sunny so you remember how it feels to come out of hiding, out of the shadows and into the sunhine and light?" The little puppy was SO happy with her new name and chased her tail round and round and made Bunny Blue dizzy all over again! Dorrie reminded them that their Mom was probably wondering where they were, and they had better start going home before it got too late. So the four new friends wended their way back through Wimbledon Woods, along the road, through the little white gate to the narrow path leading up to the cottage. When they reached the gate, Bunny Blue stopped and said she would wait outside because she didn't know how the Mother would take to bunnies and she didn't want to make things difficult for Sunny seeing she was a stranger to the family. If the mom and dad were to accept Sunny into their home, Bunny Blue didn't want to take their attention away from her. She was a very big hearted little rabbit. As Dorrie and Corrie entered the house the wonderful smell of freshly cooked something, wafted out to them and when they went into the ktichen there was Mommy standing by the counter transferring freshly baked cookies from the cookie sheet to a rack to cool down. Seeing her children come in she smiled at them and said, " There you are, I was about to come looking for you and tell you to come and have a glass of milk and fresh chocolate chip cookies." Then she looked down and saw Sunny who was sitting at her feet, her little nose sniffing and her tail wagging softly as her head bent to one side, an anxious puppy question mark in her soft brown eyes. "Well now, who have we here?", asked Mrs Finley, bending down to pat Sunny on the head which set her tail from a gentle back and forth wave to a flurry of wagging. The girls then told her all about how Corrie first heard Sunny crying and went looking for her and how Dorrie caught up and went with her. How Bunny Blue had led them to the hollow tree trunk. How they had found her and given her a name because she didn't have one. How she had lost her mommy that morning run over by a logging truck so they had brought her home and wanted to know if Sunny could stay with them forever and ever. Mrs Finley smiled and said, " We'll have to see what you dad says when he gets home from work and if he says it's alright then Sunny can stay" She then went on to cook Mr Finley's FAVORITE supper, which was roast beef ( medium rare) potatoes and salad and icecream ( strawberry flavor) with chocolate topping for desert. Mr Finley came home after a little while and they sat down to eat. While they were eating, Sunny had been put in the bedroom out of sight, but when supper was over, Corrie said, "Daddy, we have a nice 'sprise for you to see, Close you eyes, okay, please?" Mr Finley look surprised but obediently closed his eyes, and Corrie ran to the bedroom and called in a loud whisper to Sunny to come with her. When they reached the kitchen, Sunny sat down at Mr Finley's feet and wagged her tail. " You can open your eyes now, Dad" said Dorrie. Mr Finley didn't look down at first and was wondering where the surprise was when a soft whine at his feet made him look to see where it come from and his eyes widened when he looked into a pair of soft brown puppy eyes that smiled back at him " My goodness", he exclaimed, smiling," Who have we here?" " This is Sunny, Daddy" cried Corrie and proceeded to tell him the whole story all over again. Mr Finley listened intently and at the end he asked, " What about the bunny you met who led you to the tree trunk?" Corrie piped in," Just a minut,e" and she flew out of the door and ran down the path to the little white gate wondering if Bunny Blue would still be there because they had been such a long time indoors and she didn't think BB would wait. But there she was, patiently sitting outside the gate chewing on a dandelion leaf. Tugging on her paw, Corrie pulled Bunny Blue up the path telling her what they had done and that her Dad had asked about her. When the Finleys saw Bunny Blue they loved her quiet, gentle way and her silky smooth pretty blue grey fur coat. They praised her for her part is rescuing Sunny, and asked her if she was wanting to come and live with them too. When the girls heard this, they jumped all around with happinness and excitement. " You mean we can keep Sunny with us, Dad ?" they cried. "Well," replied Mr Finley," We'll have to ask around first and see if she belongs to someone else but if no one claims her, yes, she can live with us. " If," he added seriously, but with a twinkle in his eye, " If you girls are willing to feed, walk and see that she behaves" " Absolutely! " chorused Dorrie and Corrie, and they begged their Mom to phone around right away and see if they could find out if anyone would say they had lost a dog and puppy. While she did this, the girls turned to Bunny Blue and asked her what she would like to do. "Thankyou," she said to Mr Finley, " but I have my own home in Wimbledon Woods and do not want to leave it. It is a nice cosy warm burrow and I love it very much. But my three new friends could come and play with me whenever they like. Would you do this?" she turned to the girls and Sunny. They all nodded vigorously and immediately started making plans for when they could get together again. After a while, Mrs Finley came into the kitchen from the living room where the phone was and told them she had called all around the neighbors and no one had known anything about a missing dog. They had concluded she must have been a stray, and most everyone said Sunny should stay with the Finleys since the girls had rescued her. So there was great rejoicing and Sunny wagged and wagged her little tail and Bunny Blue started getting dizzy watching her, and the girls began right away to take care of Sunny by fixing her a bowl of scraps from the roast, and even gave her a treat of some icecream which she LOVED. Mrs Finley reminded them all that this would not be Sunny's steady diet and that the next day they would be buying some Dog food because they could not be giving her People food every day! It was getting late and Bunny Blue said she needed to get back to her home that she called Blue Burrow, and that her three new friends were very welcome to visit whenever they could come to the Woods again. Mr and Mrs Finley said BB was welcome to take all the dandelion leaves she could carry home with her if she liked, because dandelions were only weeds and they didn't want weeds around the garden. Bunny Blue's eyes lit up and her nose waffled in expectation of a grocery store so near where all the food was free ! Later that night, Sunny, who was allowed to sleep in the girls' bedroom and was supposed to curl up on the carpet, somehow found her way onto Corrie's bed and snuggled up against her so happy she was still wagging her tail till it moved slower and slower and she fell asleep. She dreamed wonderful puppy dreams, that even though she was very sad and missing her mommy, she was loved and welcomed in her new home and had made three wonderful new friends. So, here we will leave Sunny and perhaps come back again with another story about her and the things she did with Dorrie, Corrie and Bunny Blue.
