It is about a Teddy called Jimko whose best friend was the little girl, Teddy Girl, who went everywhere with him. One day the two of them were looking in the window of a toy store when Jimko noticed a really curious looking box almost hidden behind a set of stuffed monkeys that were hanging by their tails and arms from a rubber tree off to the left hand side of the window.
"Can we go inside and see if there is something in that box?", Jimko asked. "Sure, Jimko", replied his friend. So they pushed open the door and somewhere a bell jingled like wind chimes only the sound was more like a melody of birds singing than chimes ringing. It was so pretty than Jimko went back outside and came in again so he could hear the door play the music again. Winding their way round some tables and cupboards loaded with toys, games and stuffed animals, all of which looked interesting, but Jimko didn't stop to examine any of them. He was MUCH more curous about the odd looking box and wanted to pick it up and maybe shake it a little to see if it would rattle ! " Can I help you?" A soft voice spoke behind them. They turned to see a gentle looking woman with auburn hair and green eyes, who was dressed in a long loose fitting pale green gown that had a wide deep yellow sash around the waist. On her feet were golden colored slippers with matching green velvet trim. "Oh yes, please," cried Jimko,"We want to look in that box behind the monkeys". He pointed to the odd shaped box half hidden from view. " Ah", said the gentle lady smiling, "you have picked out a very special box that most people do not notice". She reached over and lifted up the box which she then handed to Jimko who handed it to Teddy Girl because he was afraid he might drop it in his excitement. He did feel and shake the box a little but nothing rattled. The box was about the size of three small matchboxes put together and very light even though it was made of a dark rose colored wood, and was shaped like a miniature chest. Even as Teddy Girl held it she felt a funny feeling flow through her body - a quiver of excitement and expectancy. She looked at the lady in the green gown and asked, " Is this box very expensive?" The lady looked at Teddy Girl and Jimko's eager faces and anxious eyes and said, "This is a very different kind of box.It is not a toy you see, and whoever wants to keep it does not need to pay for it. The condition to keep it is that when you get it home, you find out its secret and when you have, if you complete whatever needs to be done, you bring the box back to me. Would you be willing to do this ?" Both of them nodded vigorously so the lady told them the box should not be wrapped but to take it home and then return it when they had found its secret and done whatever they discovered. You can imagine how FAST Teddy Girl and Jimko hurried home with their treasure and couldn't WAIT to see what was inside the little box! As soon as they got home they went into Teddy Girl's' bedroom, shut the door and sat on her bed to look at the box more closely. It had a tiny gold clasp on the lid that fastened onto a small gold hook on the box and when they undid it, Jimko took a deep breath and lifted the lid up. At first the two of them were very disappointed for they were looking for something extra ordinarily unusual, like maybe an exotic Oriental piece of jewelry, or an African ivory carving, or maybe even a unique sort of game to play. Instead, all that lay in the bottom of the box were three different colored folded pieces of paper. They were green, blue and pink.. "How ODD!" exclaimed Teddy Girl. " Oh my," said Jimko, "I thought there would be something much more exciting than three pieces of paper, even if they ARE different colors. Maybe we should see if there is anything written on them. Would you see if there is, and read them, Teddy Girl?" Teddy Girl picked out the green one and smoothed it out so the folds didn't make it all wrinkled. When she was smoothing it out, it seemed to grow larger and larger until it was big enough to cover the whole bed - and that was a full sized bed !! Jimko's eyes were growing larger and larger too as he watched that green paper spreading out all over the comforter. "WOW!" he gasped. "We would never have thought such a small folded paper could become so big!! " When it was finally all opened out the two friends had to get off the bed to make room for it. Teddy Girl saw some writing in the top left hand corner and this is what she read out loud to Jimko. " The person or persons who reads this will be given the Gift of making a wish that will come true when what is written on the three colored papers in this box is done. Before you read any further, IF you choose to do it you need to make a Wish FIRST. You will NOT tell anyone what your Wish is until AFTER it comes true and then you will return the box to the place you found it." "Ooooh" cried Jimko, "We can make a wish come TRUE ?" He jumped up and down as high as a teddy can jump. " I want to make one, are you going to wish too, Teddy Girl?" he looked anxiously at his friend in case he would have to do something he didn't understand and be separated from his friend. Teddy Girl laughed delightedly and said, " Of COURSE I am going to make a wish and then we will see what this green paper says we have to do. So how about we both close our eyes and make our wish but remember, we mustn't tell anyone, not even each other." So both of them stood very still by the edge of the bed, closed their eyes and were silent as they made their wishes. Then Teddy Girl looked at the green paper again and continued to read. This is what she read. " You have picked the green paper. There is a no right or wrong order to choose the colored papers, because all three give you the same instructions of what to do so your wish can come true. Depending on which color you choose decides the number of things you will need to do before you qualify to earn your wish coming true. Blue would give you three things to do. Green gives you five, and pink gives you seven. You have chosen green, so here is the first thing you must do. As you see, this is a large piece of paper. You need to make it into a green tent without tearing it. This is Thing number One. When you have done this, go inside the tent and you will find out what to do next. If more than one person is reading this and the tent is large enough, you may make it together but no more than two at a time. Also, whatever you do, or wherever you go, you MUST take this green paper with you. Do not add to, or try to do less than what is asked and your wish will come true. Best wishes to you" Jimko could hardly contain himself and Teddy Girl was as excited as he was to see how they could make a green paper tent without tearing it. Teddy girl went to the bookshelf in her bedroom that had an encyclopedia on one of the shelves and looked up TENTS. She found a picture of what was called a pup tent that was small but large enough for her and Jimko to crawl into. So very very CAREFULLY, they made a pup tent with lots of scotch tape to hold it in place ! When it was standing upright, they both carefully crawled inside and to their amazement as soon as they were both inside, the walls of the tent became solid and were no longer made of green paper, but became a green wooden room, and the front tent flap turned into a dark green door. Even more amazing were the two large windows that appeared either side of the room. They quickly ran to one window and looked out. Oh MY! Outside the window was not the neighborhood they knew so well, nor their yard with the trees and birds they loved to watch, but instead, there stretched out a vast expanse of sandy shoreline with blue sea sparkling in under a bright sun. Instead of oak and pines, there were palm trees some of which had coconuts on them. The door opened onto the beach so Teddy Girl and Jimko took off their shoes so they could feel the warm sand and ran out of the door to the water's edge and squealed with delight as they felt the warm water wash over their toes. Teddy Girl, stopped suddenly and said, " Jimko, the green paper said we were to take it with us wherever we go or whatever we do. We have to go back and somehow see if we can fold up the room. But HOW do we do that?" They tracked back up the beach to the wood walled room and were amazed because the minute they touched the door it started to dissolve back into the pup tent and then back into the large piece of paper. This, they quickly folded up and Teddy Girl put it in her jean's pocket. They then returned to the water's edge and Jimko was about to see if he could do a little dive under a little wave that came towards him when he noticed out of the corner of his eye that there was something white blowing on the side of one of the palm trees behind them. He called to Teddy Girl "Teddy Girl, I want to see what that is that looks like a flag or something on that Palm tree" he pointed to the tree
The white object that had caught his eye turned out to be a white envelope with a thin piece of string through a hole tying it to the palm tree trunk. Jimko couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the names Jimko and Teddy Girl written on the envelope in small neat handwriting. " Teddy Girl come here quickly." he called excitedly, waving the envelope as he beckoned Teddy Girl over. " Look, it has our names on it. This will tell us Thing Number Two!. " exclaimed Teddy Girl when she saw the envelope. Jimko ask her to open it and read what was inside, so she hurriedly tore open the envelope and pulled out a piece of paper with more neatly written words on it. It said: "If you have found this envelope, your instructions are to look for a large Conch shell on the beach and listen to the message you will hear if you hold it to your ear." "What is a Conch shell, Teddy Girl?" asked Jimko, looking puzzled. " Well,I think I would know one if I saw it." replied his friend, " How about we go look for shells and then if we find one I can tell you if it is a Conch or not". ( Littles, you can ask your Bigs what a Conch shell is, okay? )
So the two of them decided to split up and one went to the right and one went to the left. They walked along the sand looking for any sign of a shell in the sand or the little pools of water that dotted the shore. They saw pieces of driftwood that were all interesting shapes and size and imagined how they could be made into lovely ornaments if they were polished and shiny. They were searching for about fifteen minutes when Jimko shouted for Teddy Girl to come look at what he had found. "This is perfect Conch shell, Jimko" she clapped her hands delightedly - she held it up then looked at Jimko. " YOU listen and tell us what the message is, Jimko. You found the envelope and you found the shell so you should hear what the message says". Jimko's smile beamed from ear to ear and he held the shell tight against his right ear and listened hard. At first, all he heard was a roaring sound like a Whoosh, Whoosh noise - very much like the waves that surged up against the rocks and washed back down. As he listened more closely, straining to hear some words, gradually, the whoosh whoosh noise became like a singing voice. As Jimko strained to hear words. It seemed to him as though he could hear from the shell a whispering that was saying, " To make your wish come true you need to do Thing Number Three. Sail your boat to the little Island you can see if you look far over to the horizon on the right of you. When you get there you will know more".
Jimko related what he thought he heard to Teddy Girl, saying " But we don't HAVE a boat!" Teddy Girl thought a moment, then said slowly, " You know, Jimko, I think I know why we were told to always have our green paper with us. remember how we could make it into a pup tent? I bet we are to use it to make us a boat!" She pulled out the folded piece of paper, smoothed it out again so there were no wrinkles, and then she and Jimko started to fold it into a little boat like they had been taught in school when they had a class on making paper hats, dolls, boats etc. Once more as they began to shape the paper, both their eyes grew large as the boat grew larger and soon there was a full size sail boat rocking gently in the water. They climbed into the boat and had to find their balance as they hadn't been in a boat on the sea before and they were excited but nervous and afraid it might tip right over, but it didn't. Teddy Girl read a page of instructions that was pinned on the mast where the sail was blowing in a breeze that had come up, and steered the boat towards the Island they could see off in the distance to the right. As they sailed nearer and nearer to the Island they could see a small inlet that Teddy Girl headed for and their boat seemed to have a mind of its own because it wound in and out of the rocks along the inlet into a little bay where it came to a stop beached up on the shore as though someone had shoved it hard up onto the sand. The friends climbed out of their vessel and looked around them. A creaking noise caught their attention and they watched in amazement as their boat started to shrink. It became smaller land smaller and its solid wood frame, mast and sail gradually disappeared and it became a piece of green paper once more. Alarmed, Jimko, tugged at Teddy Girl's arm and asked anxiously, " Teddy Girl! our boat has gone, how are we going to get off the Island? " She looked at the paper and patted Jimko on the shoulder. " From what we have seen, Jimko," she assured him, 'It seems our piece of paper is able to give us just what we need when we need it. And look! I see new writing on it now!" Sure enough, as she smoothed it out again, there was another message. " If you are reading this message it means you are standing on the Island called " Wishes". For YOUR wish to come true , you must accomplish Thing number Four and find a Dolphin in the Lake of Smiling Waters which is the other side of the Island. The Dolphin's name is Soft Wave and she will let you know what Thing number Five is." So the two set off to walk to the other side of the Island and had the greatest fun stopping to look at brightly feathered birds who trilled, whistled and warbled in a way they had never heard before. They also flew in beautiful graceful air ballets so that they made colored patterns in the sky as their feathers were caught in the sunlight - swirling ribbons of blue, orange, pink, green, yellow, lavender, turquoise - all colors of the rainbow weaving in and out as they flew up and down, round and zig zag sometimes disappearing in the tropical greenery of the lush growth. The friends watched enthralled but kept on their walk across the Island marveling at the waterfalls that cascaded over moss-covered jutting shelves and projections of grey and red rock. Suddenly, with a simultaneous gasp, the two of then stood open mouthed as they rounded a bend in the path and came upon what was surely The Lake of Smiling waters for there was a large expanse of rippling clear blue water in the shape of a mouth that was curved into a smile and the ripples was caused by five Dolphins leaping, diving and splashing in Dolphin play as the sun sparkled through the spray they made throwing miniature rainbows that were reflected on the Lake's surface. " How beautiful." breathed Teddy Girl in awe. "DOLPHINS!" cried Jimko. "we have to find Soft Wave. Then we only have ONE more thing to do and our Wish will come true. WHOOOOEEEEE" They studied the Dolphins frolicking in the Lake and noticed that one of them, even though it leaped and dived as the rest did, made hardly a splash as it glided into the water. " That has to be Soft Wave" whispered Jimko, though he really didn't need to whisper. Then he took in a deep breath and called out, "Soft Wave! Soft Wave! is that you out there?" At the sound of his voice the Dolphin they had been watching made a graceful turn in the water and swam over to where they stood holding their breath. She looked at them right in the eye and stayed floating close to where they stood. " I think she wants us to get on her back" said Teddy Girl. The two of them waded out a short way into the lake and climbed up on the Dolphin's back. Teddy girl held onto her back fin and Jimko held on to his friend. Soft Wave made a gentle curve turning out across the Lake and swam smoothly, cutting through the water with the friends holding on and feeling the water wash against their legs and the breeze blow their hair. A fine salty spray felt mist-like against their faces and the shouted with glee and excitement. As they looked down, the water became transparent so they could see brightly colored fish darting in and out of green reeds and rocks. Beautiful underwater plant life. Pink corral reefs, and dark patches where the water disappeared into unknown caverns caught them in utter fascination as they glided across The Lake of Smiling Waters. Soft Wave suddenly dove deep down into the Lake yet Jimko and Teddy Girl found they could breathe and talk with ease and it was like they were no different than if they were playing on land. Soft Wave took them right amongst the fish and some of them swam along side that was really special. As they were winding in and out of the Lake's secret wonders,Teddy Girl became aware that Soft Wave was creating letters out of the grasses they were swimming through. She nudged Jimko and whispered, "Look behind us, Jimko. All the reeds and grasses we have been through are spelling out letters" Teddy Girl read each letter out loud and Jimko put them together into words. When Soft Wave stopped and rocked gently back and forth, the friends read out the sentence Soft Wave had spelled out in the grasses and reeds. It said, " When we reach the mirrors look in them and see your wish. It will come true when you see it is what you truly wished for, as soon as you return the box to its owner you will be able to have it" When Teddy Girl stopped reading the friends felt Soft Wave start to swim again and she took them down, down, down, into the Lake's bottom where they saw a Mermaid lying on a bed of different colored anemones. As they came nearer she waved to them and beckoned them to go with her. Her long tail swishing just like a tropical fish, the Mermaid told them her name was Shimmering, and she was to lead them to the cave of Mirrors. Soft Wave glided up alongside Shimmering and they were off along the bottom of the lake floor towards a cavern like opening that went back into a vast rocky wall rising from the floor bed up through the lake surface. The wall face was covered with different sized and shaped mirrors of different colors. Each mirror had a number beside it ranging from ONE to FOURTEEN though there must have been at least a hundred and sixty of them all over the rock face ! As Shimmering and Soft Wave swam into the cavern, Shimmering told the friends they were to each find the mirror with their favorite number between 1 and 14 and then find the mirror that was their favorite color. When the numbered mirror was the same as their favorite color they would only need to look in it and see the day their wish would come true, and also see how they could get it. Excitedly, Jimko told Soft Wave that his favorite color was orange and his favorite number was 10. Teddy Gril said her favorite color was pink and her favorite number was 4. So Shimmering offered to take Teddy Girl and swim along the mirrors till she found hers, and Soft Wave said Jimko could stay with her and they would look for his mirror. This seemed a good idea so off they went in different directions. It took quite a while, because they would find their favorite color but the wrong number, or the right number and the wrong color. A loud WHOOP from Jimko told them all he had found his colored and favorite numbered mirror and not too long after, Teddy Girl let out a shriek, "I found mine!" They were at opposite ends of the wall, so could not see each other's mirror. As they each looked into the mirror in front of them they saw what they wished for clearly shown and were thrilled.
Then there was a single sentence that flowed across the glass surface in purple script that read, " Return the box and this will come true." as they finished reading, the mirrrors went blank and they were no different from all the others on the rock wall face. "How do we get home?" Jimko asked loudly and his voice echoed eerily in the cavern. Soft Wave and Shimmering had already turned around heading out of the cavern and as they emerged into the lake and begun swimming towards the surface, a huge shadow loomed above them. When they were beyond it and surfaced, they saw it was a large cruise ship with people standing at the railings admiring the island they had been exploring. " OOOOOH, LOOK, Mommy!" cried one little girl who had spotted Teddy and Girl and Jimko " A DOLPHIN and a MERMAID !!!!" As soon as others heard this shriek of delight, people came running to the side of the ship to see what the fuss was about. The big boat tilted over to the left as people all crowded to the railings to see a little girl and a Teddy riding their water friends.
Shimmering said quietly, " This is where we must say goodbye now, because you can go home on this ship". Jimko and Teddy Girl were very sad to hear this, but they also wanted to get home and to return the box to the lady in green at the shop, so their wishes could come true. Teddy Girl called up to a sailor on the ship and told thim they needed a ride and could they come aboard? A row boat was lowered and the friends, after giving Soft Wave and Shimmering a loving hug and saying a BIG THANK YOU, climbed into the row boat that was hoisted up on deck and they clambered out. As the ship pulled away, Teddy Girl and Jimko, waved to their new friends and Soft Wave made a high leap in the air and disappeared smoothly and quietly into the water after waving her tail in goodbye. Shimmering waved her hand to the friends and called, " Come back and see me again?" Then she too, disappeared below the surface and out of sight. Feeling very sad at having to say goodbye to their friends they were soon very busy for the next hour surrounded by children and grownups all wanting to hear about their adventures. While they were describing the cavern the Captain joined the group and told Teddy Girl and Jimko that he had been given a message that a seagull had brought, dropping it from its bill onto the deck outside the Captain's cabin. He said that he was to put the friends into a small boat and they were to row to shore and would find themselves a way to get home when they reached the shore. Anxious to get home and worried what their family would be thinking they hurriedly followed a sailor down the deck to where one of the life boats was being lowered into the sea and they had to climb down a swaying rope ladder. Jimko was really nervous but he closed his eyes and diidn't look down and the sailor the boat lifted him from the bottom rung of the rope ladder and sat him safely on the middle seat, In no time at all they reached the shore and as soon as their feet touched the sand they suddenly they found themselves in their back yard and hearing Teddy Girl's name being called to come in for lunch. They looked at each other in amazement. " Hey" Jimko whispered as they hurried into the house, "I don't think Mom even knows we LEFT ! " Sure enough, it turned out their mother hadn't realized they had been anywhere but in the yard or down town !. Teddy Girl asked her if she and Jimko might just take a quick run to the toy store they had seen earlier because she just liked to see the things in the window. Her mother looked at her smiling, and said, " You have been such a good girl this past week, I will give you five dollars and if you see some thing you like you can get it." " WOW. THANKS, Mom" She hugged her mother and after she helped wash the dishes she and Jimko picked up the box from the bedroom and hurrired back to the shop. The lady in Green welcomed them back, smiling kindly and her green eyes seemed to shine like emeralds as she took the box from them. "Did you find your wishes?" she asked " We have to return the box to you first" said Jimko, and handed it over to the lady reluctantly because he thought that somehow would stop his wish coming true. The shop owner took the box and put it back in the same spot where they had first seen it then said gentle " When you leave here you will know what to do to make your wish come true." Teddy Girl rememberd she had five dollars to spend but she wanted to know about her wish more than to buy some thing, and any way, she could save the money and take Jimko for an ice cream or banana split some day. So they thanked the lady in green for her kindness and the two friends hurried out of the door, listening to the chimes like birds singing as they went through the door. When they were walking along the street, Teddy Girl stopped suddenly and turned to Jimko. " Jimko,I don't know what you wished for and we can tell when it has come true, so I can tell you what I wished for, DO you want to know?" Jimko clapped his paws and said, " Oh YES PLEASE, Teddy Girl. What did you wish?" " I wished that you could have the best time of your life in a an adventure you have never had before and that you would find some friends besides me so we could have lots of fun altogether". Jimko looked like he had swallowed a hamburgers without taking a bite out of it - he almost choked, " Teddy Girl, that is JUST what I wished for YOU - and look what we did - we have had the most funnest time ever, and made friends with a Dolphin and a Mermaid. We have seen the most beautiful places on the Island and been under the Lake of Smiling Waters. Isn't it cool we thought of each other with the same wish." They were both silent a minute remembering where they had been and what they had done. Later that night when it was bedtime, Teddy Girl was getting into her PJs when she went to get the five dollar bill out of her jean's pocket. What she pulled out was not the money but a piece of green paper ! " Jimko. Look! " She waved the paper in front of his face, "We have the green paper. we should take it back tomorrow. It belongs in the box" While she was speaking, the paper curled roung her middle finger and shrunk quickly becoming hard and smooth and when it stopped curling she saw a perfect jade ring on her finger. Jimko jumped up and down in excitement. "Is it too late to call the lady in green?" he almost shouted. Teddy Girl gave him a hug and said, " I am sure the lady doesn't live at the shop, Jimko, and yes, it is too late to call her now. We will call as soon as the shop opens okay?" It seemed to Jimko that the night was extra LONG that night and he had a hard time getting to sleep. When he finally dropped off he slept so late it was after 8a.m when he woke up and Teddy Girl was sitting on the bed with a huge grin on her face. "Guess what," She crowed, " Green Lady said I could keep the ring becasue the box only has papers in it and there seems to be another piece of green paper there from somewhere". Jimko tugged at her arm, " But Teddy Girl, what does the ring do?" " What did it do before?" Teddy Girl asked. " whenever we needed something REALLY badly, the paper made it happen. Let's try it out. What do we need right now, I mean, REALLY need. I don't think it works with any old thing we might wish for". The two of them sat and thought a while 'cos it was hard to think of some thing they REALLY REALLY needed, After a little while, Jimko said "I wonder if it would work for someone else? Like we know that the little girl down the street has always wanted a Pooh Bear. See if the ring can make it happen for her". Teddy Girl didn't know how she should could make the ring do anything, and thought she would try turning it a few times round her finger. She twisted it three or four times as they looked out of the bedroom window down the street to where they could see the house the little girl lived in. Nothing. She turned to Jimko and said, " You try, maybe you will have more luck" She held out her hand to Jimko and he twisted it. "I'm going to turn it lots of times cos you didn't do it very much." he said. he turned the ring round and round about ten times. As soon as he let her hand go, they saw the mailman stop at the house down the road and take a large box up to the door. " WOW. DO you think that could be a Pooh Bear?" Jimko asked. " Don't know how we will ever know," replied Teddy Girl, " because we don't even know her name and there is no excuse for going to her house". Suddenly she stopped short and with a strange look on her face to said, " Jimko, how many times did you turn the ring?" " I think it was ten" "Let me try some thing" Teddy Girl said. She twisted the ring a few times and made a wish. As soon as she stopped the door bell downstairs rang. They went to the bedroom door and listend as her mother opened the front door. Standing on the step was the mother of the little girl who lived down the street. "I'm so sorry to bother you," she said, "but do you by any chance have a little milk I could borrow? I get paid at the end of the week, but I am fresh out and do not have the money to buy any right now, and my little girl needs some thing to eat". The lady was poorly dressed and looked very thin. Teddy Girl's mother had the lady come in and sit down while she got a bottle of milk and some eggs that she put in a paper sack and gave it to her. The lady was almost in tears she looked so grateful as she thanked her profusely. "You don't know HOW much this means to me. My littel girl has so little to eat, or play with. This morning, I don't know how it happened, but the mailman brought a Pooh Bear that came from an Agency that gives stuffed toys and animals to underprivileged children. Some one must have given them our address. I have NEVER seen her so happy in all her six years. She won't let him go for one minute!" Jimko and Teddy Girl looked at each other in delight, "Guess what, Jimko" Teddy Girl breathed in a whisper till they went back in the bedroom and closed the door. " I have figured out how the ring works. You turned it ten times and I turned it four. We have to turn it the number of times of our favorite number, Just like we used them to find the mirrors in the cavern so our wishes would come true. Your favorite number is ten and mine is four." So this is how the two friends continued to fill their wishes for each other, by using the ring to help others who REALLY REALLY needed some thing - and it happened. **************************** Goessoftly (Retired Therapist) http://www.goessoftlyishere.com Permission for reprints is required. | PIGMUS STORY 1.
